Green Roof System

Urbanscape is an innovative, lightweight and easy to install system with high water retention capacity designed specifically for green roofs on residential, non-residential and industrial buildings in urban areas. Urbanscape Green Roof is a complete system, which consists of a root membrane, a drainage system with or without buffer, a growing media – a unique patented rock mineral wool – and a vegetation layer. The irrigation system shall be provided depending on the local climate conditions.

Urbanscape Root Membrane

Urbanscape Root Membrane is made from black LD Polyethylene regenerate foil which is used to prevent the roots penetrating in green roofs.

Urbanscape Drainage System with buffer

The Urbanscape Drainage System with buffer is a double sided drainage and reservoir board made from heavy duty recycled polystyrene with excellent load bearing capacity specifically designed for green roofs. The panels are perforated on one side to allow installation with the holes on the upper side for water retention. It ensures the buffering of water in dry periods and rapid drainage of water in wet periods in green roofs and additionally aerates the root system of the plants. The drainage system is made of high quality plastic to ensure that the system is lighter and more compact comparing to regular drainage layers.

Urbanscape Green Roll Multipurpose Growing Media

Urbanscape Green Roll is a lightweight green roof multi-functional growing media, made of long rock mineral wool fibres specially needled to form a compact and dimensionally stable felt. The product is made solely of virgin rock mineral fibres. Urbanscape Green Roll ensures excellent water retention and conservation in green roofs and is a good growing medium made from various mineral mixtures.

Urbanscape Sedum-mix Blanket

The biodegradable Urbanscape Sedum-mix blankets comprise ten to twelve different species of Sedum. The blankets boast at least 90% coverage upon delivery. Urbanscape vegetation blankets are produced in accordance with FLL guidelines. The sebaceous Sedum plants are adept at storing water in their leaves and are therefore extremely suitable for varying weather conditions.

Urbanscape Drainage Universal

Urbanscape Drainage System is a high-performance CE-marked drainage system with an innovative dimple design made out of recycled high impact polystyrene. Protection fleece attached to the drainage can be used as waterproofing protection layer (when facing down) or as a seperation layer (when facing up).

Step 1: Roof preparation

Step 1: Roof preparation

Clean the roof with a broom. Check if the waterproofing membrane is not damaged to ensure the water tightness of the roof. Remove all dirt and sharp objects.

Step 2: Urbanscape Root Membrane

Step 2: Urbanscape Root Membrane

If the waterproofing membrane is not resistant to root penetration, cover the roof with the Urbanscape Root Membrane.

The root membrane should cover the waterproofing membrane with overlap of 0.5 meter on all sides and approx. 20 cm overlap on the edges and upstands.

Ensure that wind uplift of the root membrane is prevented. Cut out the root membrane where drain baskets must be installed. Do not cut directly on the waterproof membrane.

Do not use a sharp-bladed cutter or knife.

Step 3: Urbanscape Drainage System

Step 3: Urbanscape Drainage System

Choose the drainage system:

(a) Urbanscape drainage with buffer – boards. Install the boards with the holes on top, with an overlap of one row of dimples.

(b) Urbanscape drainage Universal (without buffer) – rolls, on 1 side with fleece. Roll out the drainage and make sure the fleece is facing down. Install the rolls tightly side by side and make sure that the additional fleece is under the next drainage roll.

Cover the roof area with the Urbanscape drainage panels/rolls.

When the drainage with buffer is used, install the drainage with an overlap of one row of dimples.

Cut out the drainage boards/rolls where drain baskets must be installed. For safety reasons and protection of the drainage panels/rolls use a hook cutter. Do not use a sharp-bladed cutter or knife.

Mark the areas of the vegetation free zone. Option: place the aluminium profile around the sedum and put the L side under gravel of the vegetation free zone.

Step 4: Urbanscape Green Roll

Step 4: Urbanscape Green Roll

Roll out Urbanscape Green Roll crosswise on top of the Urbanscape drainage panels/rolls. Install Urbanscape Green Roll tightly side by side.

If necessary Urbanscape Green Roll can be cut to the right size (scissors preferable).

Step 5: Urbanscape Sedum-mix Blanket

Step 5: Urbanscape Sedum-mix Blanket

Gently roll out the Urbanscape Sedum-mix blanket crosswise on Urbanscape.

Carry the blankets with two persons, always with a flip on the top to avoid damaging the vegetation.

Check the position of the Urbanscape Sedum-mix blanket before rolling out.

If necessary, the Urbanscape Sedum-mix blanket can be cut to the right size by scissors or a hook cutter.

The Urbanscape Sedum-mix blanket must cover the total area of Urbanscape Green Roll.

Step 6: Drain basket

Step 6: Drain basket

Place drain basket on drain pipes.

For proper functioning of the drainage it’s necessary that the outlets are recognizable and accessible for maintenance.

Step 7: Gravel area

Step 7: Gravel area

Fill up the areas of the vegetation free zone with gravel with a fraction size of 16-32mm.

Make sure that Urbanscape root membrane and drainage is totally covered.

The height of gravel should be at the same level as the Urbanscape Sedum-mix blanket.

Step 8: After installation

Step 8: After installation

Cut off the visible root membrane from the roof edges and upstands. Do not cut directly on the waterproof membrane. Do not use a sharp-bladed cutter or knife.

Fill potential bare spots of Urbanscape Sedum-mix blankets with pieces of vegetation.

Water the vegetation until the Urbanscape Green Roll is completely saturated (follow the Urbanscape green roof system maintenance guideline).

Step 9: Installation & Maintenance Tips

Before installation

Check the local green roof regulations.

Comply with safety requirements for roof installation.

Check the accessibility to electricity and water.

Check the position of the drain pipes.

Materials storage

Store all materials out of direct sunlight.

Make sure that the weight of the materials does not exceed the load-bearing capacity of the roof and building construction.

Installation

Start installation within 24 hours from the delivery as the vegetation blankets shall not be kept more than a few days (including transport time) in rolls.

Install the green roof in above freezing temperature and in low wind speed conditions.

Maintenance

Fertilise the vegetation with the Urbanscape nutrients 1 or 2 times a year.

The irrigation system shall be provided depending on the local climate conditions.
